Why I love CBD for sleep, stress, and anxiety!

CBD is gaining a lot of recent popularity for its calming effects, but what exactly is it? Read to learn more about what CBD is and how it’s been helpful for me in terms of lessening stress and helping me sleep!

So far on this blog, I’ve mentioned a lot of mental strategies to deal with anxiety. But, as we know, anxiety can have a lot of physical effects as well as mental effects. For me, one of the most difficult physical symptoms of anxiety that I struggle with is trouble sleeping. It’s like the moment I lay down to sleep, my mind decides it has to both a) run through every single event of my day and analyze everything I said and did and what other people said and did and b) start thinking about everything I have to do tomorrow/this week/this year, what my five-year plan should be, what I need to pack for that next trip, what I need to get next time I go to CVS, and…you see where this is going. My mind just seems to explode with thoughts at bed time, making it difficult for me to sleep even when I’m tired.

Luckily this doesn’t happen every single night, and there are some nights when I know this is more likely to happen, like Sunday nights (maybe it’s because I’m thinking about the week ahead?), nights before big events like job interviews, etc…but it also happens on a lot of random nights that I can’t predict. Enter CBD.

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil has been gaining a lot of popularity in recent months, probably due to the legalization (and subsequent de-stigmatization) of marijuana in some states. CBD is derived from the cannabis plant, but does not have any psychoactive properties, so it won’t make you feel “high.” I’m definitely no expert, so if you’re interested you can read more about CBD here (and plenty of other places on the internet).  Since I’d heard CBD oil had really helped a lot of people with anxiety (among a ton of other issues), and I had tried everything to help my sleeping issues to no avail, I thought I’d give it a try. And I’m happy to report that it totally worked! CBD is the only thing I’ve found so far that quiets my mind so that I can fall asleep without all the frenzied thoughts running midnight marathons in my head.

How CBD calms me down (naturally)

CBD can be taken in many different forms, and is totally natural. When I take CBD, I feel naturally more relaxed, aware of my body and the physical space around me, and less in my head. It’s similar to what I experience during meditation – I know there are a lot of thoughts bouncing around in my head but I’m just noticing them, detached, instead of creating stories about them. When I take CBD, I just feel a sense of ease and calmness. A lot of times the thoughts quiet down altogether. And it’s great to know that what I’m taking is completely natural – that makes me feel more at ease, too.

3My favorite way to take CBD is in capsule form and diluted in oil (such as coconut) with a dropper so you can control and change how much you take at once depending on your needs, but CBD comes in tons of forms such as chocolate, gummies, and more. I’ve tried a few CBD brands, and my favorite is Infinite CBD. I love their P.M. capsules that include CBD and a small dose of melatonin – these are what I take most often for sleep. I also have their isolate dropper if I just need a small dose. They dilute theirs in coconut oil and it actually tastes good! I sometimes add it to my evening tea, but it can be taken anytime and added to any food or drink (such as this yummy Iced Chai Latte w/CBD)!

Though I mostly take CBD at night, you can take it at any time of day. I’m really glad it’s gaining popularity because I think it’s going to be so helpful for so many people, especially for those of us with anxiety!
